Memorandum
The NFHS Officials’ Quarterly
magazine is intended to be a magazine by and for junior and senior high school
officials. While the resources of the NFHS are often tapped for the
regular columns of Officials’ Quarterly, the feature articles are
intended to be written by you and your colleagues.
Officials’ Quarterly is not a
news magazine; it is a professional quarterly. Leaving scores and current
events to more frequently published sports magazines, Officials’ Quarterly
concentrates instead on subjects which will assist officials in meeting the
increasing responsibilities of their avocation.
Officials’ Quarterly is
interested in what you do game-to-game, match-to-match or meet-to-meet, as well
as in your special problems, projects and programs. It wants to share
your good ideas with other officials and wants you to receive credit for your
innovations and hard work.
ARTICLES of 1,500 to 2,000 words are
preferred, although both shorter and longer articles will be given serious
consideration. If your article is not used in full, it may be honed down
and included in other specific sections. In either case, your photograph
and a brief biographical sketch are requested to ensure that you are properly
recognized for the professionalism you have displayed and the effort you have
made in preparing your thoughts for publication.
PHOTOGRAPHS are welcome, particularly
when they relate to an article you have submitted. Charts and diagrams
that relate to articles also are invited.
YOUR ARTICLE will have greater
readability if you follow these suggestions:
1. Be direct.
Sentences which begin with the subject are best.
2. Be concise.
Sentences and paragraphs which are short are most easily understood.
3. Be precise.
Don’t say “a lot”; say exactly how many.
4. Avoid trite
expressions and overused phrases.
5. Avoid the
first person. Don’t say “we do this” or “I do that.”
6. Articles
should be typed and double-spaced.
OFFICIALS’ QUARTERLY is a
quarterly magazine published September 15, November 1, February 1 and April 15.
You should submit material at least six months prior to these dates.
We will respond to all who contribute material.
MANUSCRIPTS which have been submitted
for consideration are copied and sent to members of the NFHS Officials’
Quarterly Publications Committee. Committee members review the
manuscripts, providing comments regarding content, readability, timeliness and
newsworthiness. Members then assign the article a numerical rating.
This information is taken into consideration by the editor, who will 1) edit
the manuscript for publication, 2) return it to the author for revision or 3)
suggest another, more appropriate journal to which the article should be
submitted.
