GYM UPDATES

Bishop Moore: The center division line is incomplete at two ends. Note the letter “H” in the word “Catholic” on the gym floor. There is a break in the division line. Please be sure to put down tape over the letter “H” to insure a solid division line across the floor.

Lake Minneola: There is no coaches box end line. Please mark off 14 feet from the 28 foot line and put tape down to mark the coaches box. Also note, please put tape down for the “X” in front of the scorers table.

Winter Springs: Please put tape down to complete the center division line at the mid court circle.

Did You Know?

It could be a held ball or could be a traveling violation?

A1 jumps to try for goal or to pass the ball. B1 leaps or reaches and is able to put his/her hands on the ball and keep A1 from releasing it. A1 returns to the floor holding the ball. Ruling. A held ball results immediately when A1 is prevented from releasing the ball to pass or try for goal. Case Book 4.25.2 Page 35.

A1 jumps to try for goal. B1 also jumps and touches the ball and A1 returns to the floor holding the ball. Ruling. A traveling violation. If you rule that the touching did not prevent the pass or try, the ball remains live and the subsequent action ( travel ) is covered by rule. Case Book 4.44.3 Sit. A. Page 39.

The key to the difference is that if you saw the touching of the ball as not preventing a pass or try, it is a travel.

After a lengthy substitution process involving multiple substitutions for team A and B, A5 goes to the bench and remains there mistakenly believing he/she has been replaced. The ball is put in play even though team A has only 4 players on the court. Team A is bringing the ball into As frontcourt when the coach yells for A5 to return and he/she sprints directly onto the court catching up with the play. Ruling. No technical foul is charged to A5. A5s return was not deceitfull, nor did it provide A5 an unfair position advantage on the court. Case Book 10.3.2 sit. B, Page 85.

Following a charged time-out team B is still with their coach on the sideline when the official sounds the whistle to indicate play will resume. Four players of B return to the court just in time to play defense as A1 attemps an unsuccessful three-pointer. B1 rebounds and throws a long pass to B5 who enters the court just in time to catch the pass. Ruling. A technical foul is immediately charged to team B for failing to have all players return to the court at approximately the same time following a time-out or intermission. While it is true the entire team may be off the court while the procedure is being used, once a team responds, all players must enter the court at approximately the same time. Case Book 10.1.9 Page 84. Rule Book Rule 10.9 Page 60.

The key to the difference is, the return was during a regular substitution process and not deceitful. Failure to have ALL players return to the court at approximately the same time following a TIME OUT or INTERMISSION is always a technical foul.

IPAD/Blackberry Use on the Bench

FHSAA has clarified that any team may use an IPAD or any other electronic device for "statistical purposes only." If the coach states the use of the electronic device is for keeping statistics, the official will accept this statement from the coach and resume normal game operations.
